ENGLISH HISTORICAL VERSION

Note: In the event of conflict between the English and domesticlanguage, the English languageshall take precedence.

Purpose.

To implement a worldwide uniform process for evaluating the Squeak andRattle (SR) performanceof a complete vehicle. This includes the detection, the evaluation (bysubjective rating of SRcomplaints), as well as some root source analysis. Furthermore thedocumentation of SRcomplaints and the results of the root source analysis are describedfor initiation of problemresolution. This procedure consists of three parts: A Quasi-staticEvaluation, a Dynamic RoadSimulation Evaluation (where available) and a Dynamic On-roadEvaluation.

This procedure also provides detailed instructions for temperatureevaluations using environmentalroad simulator.

Forward.

This procedure will guide an evaluator through full vehicle Squeak andRattle Evaluations.

The General Motors Uniform Test Standard (GMUTS) Subjective RatingScale with the performance anddisturbance critera is used to evaluate components and subsystem.

Applicability.

For all passenger cars, light commercial vehicles and medium dutytrucks.

Definitions.

SR -Noise:

Disturbing or annoying noises excited by dynamic or static inputs, aswell as noises which occurwhile operating vehicle components. This means all noises which areavoidable and which customersdo not expect.

Root Source:

Often confused with Root Cause, Root Source pertains to identifyingwhere the noise source is(i.e., the exact location on each of the two parts that came incontactto produce the SR).Root source clues include witness marks, wear, fastener loosening,broken or mis-installed integralfasteners and/or clips. Root Cause Analysis goes a step further, oftenrequiring one to look at theEngineering Drawings, Tolerances, actual parts and perhaps themanufacturing and/or assemblyprocess to determine why the noise is occurring. The reasons why mayinclude that the parts are innot built to specification and that the design, manufacture andassembly processes are not capableof producing SR free parts.

Quasi-Static:

Customer actuated component and subsystem movement, operation and/oradjustment when the vehicleitself is stationary.

Typical Force:

The normal or average force required to operate an adjustment,accessory or feature of a componentor sub-system.

Mode of Operation:

The directional movement of a component that is evaluated. Forexample: The power exterior mirrorhas (4) modes of operation: up, down, inboard and outboard.
